I looked at you
And home was in your eyes
With an always open door.
Lips against my ear,
A whisper told me everything would be alright,
But words soon burned my skin
And set our house alight.
I tried to save us too many times,
But you brought a drought
To ensure the flames’ disaster
And watched with malice
As I used my tears to weaken the heat.
Fingerprints stayed like bruises,
Memories became nightmares
As I sat in the chill that you left,
With water frozen on my cheeks,
Filling the sky with wails.
And even though I had the means
To warm myself again,
The ice still lingered
Like a bitter breath in the winter air.
How I willed the time to rewind,
To look into your eyes for the first time
And see the open door,
To walk the other way
And never hand you the matches
That burned us to the ground.
